Organize a game jam in your coding club

A game jam is a gathering of game developers who come together to create new games within a short period of time, usually over a weekend.

If the students in your coding club have enought coding experience, you can attempt to organize a game jam in your coding club.

Here are a few steps you should follow:

  1. Choose a date for the game jam. The location is your coding club physical location, but it could be also an online event.

  2. Announce the game jam event in your coding club and encourage kids to participate. Do not disclose yet any details about the game jam theme.

  3. On the day of the game jam, provide participants details about the theme of the game jam. The theme can be anything you like, but it should be broad enough to give participants plenty of room to be creative..

Example:

- create a space shooter
- create a ball and paddle game
- create a logic game

  1. Give participants a set amount of time to create their games, usually between 16 and 24 hours. Students can start working imediately on the game while they are in the coding club, then continue at home and finish the game the second day while they are back in the coding club.

This can look like this: 4 hours in the club + 8 hours home + 4 hours at club.

  1. At the end of the game jam, have participants showcase their games to the group and vote on their favorites.

  2. After the game jam, encourage participants to continue developing their games, and consider hosting another game jam in the future.
